Does guitar distortion and compression really damage tweeters?

is it okay to play distorted and compressed guitar sound through speaker box that has both woofer and tweeter? Won't it damage tweeters?
How about in PA?

Tricky one,, Others will likely know more than me but My understanding is thus;
IF the distortion is generated by pedals and like gear (preamp generated distortion) then no problem.
BUT IF the poweramp driving the speakers is hard clipping then yes you can destroy tweeters.
Even if the signal is clean but poweramp hard clips it can cause damage,, power amp is high current.

Led Zeppelin will not blow your stereo tweeters, unless everything else will too.

As phatt said, if you are getting distortion ad clipping from turning the power amp up past clipping, then yes.

Most music is large low frequency signals with much smaller high frequency signals.  That is part of why you have huge woofers and small tweeters.  As you turn the music up to the point of clipping, those large bass peaks can grow no further, but the lower highs can continue to grow as you increase the volume.
