I want the distortion to go up and the output level to come down.

It's called a "complimentary com-pander", somewhat like Dolby does, 'cept you want an expander first and the compressor later in the chain.

Given that we are thinking of pretty moderate levels of comp-ansion this seems do-able.

My first thought is a couple of OTA and a current mirror.  But controlled by what?  A rocker pedal?

Thanks Roly,, Yep having messed around with some dolby stuff way back as well as some breadboard testing of a few different compressor circuits I'm unlikely to succeed. xP

Meantime I've found a way around this which I'll post in a new thread.
